about

TUSKS (aka Emily Underhill) released her debut album ‘Dissolve’ in October last year via One Little Indian showcasing a rich visual imagination and cinematic enormity. Its beautiful soundscapes resists pigeon-holing and is a fine example of an artist placing as much emotive responsibility on instrumentation and production as vocals and lyrics.

Today, Tusks shares live versions of fan favourites Paris, My Love, Last and Toronto from the acclaimed LP. ‘The idea was to recreate the tracks in quite a raw state - I always get carried away with the production and it’s nice to have the chance to strip the tracks right down to their skeleton. I started playing the stripped down versions of Last and Toronto when I was having technical issues while touring in the US last year and I actually ended up falling in love with those versions- especially the stripped version of Last, I think that takes the track in such a different direction to the original.’ says Emily.

Recorded live at Big Jelly Studios, accompanying videos for Paris, My Love and Last were directed by Tom Ewbank, with Paris featuring dancer and choreographer Danu Sunth from Tusks’ ‘False’ music video. ‘When we decided to do live videos, I really wanted to work with Danu again after working with her for the False video. She has such an incredible energy and every time we work together I feel like we’re on the exact same page. It’s like this crazy synergy where she’s able to instantly narrate the emotions in my head through her performance.’.

‘Dissolve’ was created alongside longtime co-producer Brett Cox, her resplendent detail is the work of a young artist mastering the nuances of her craft, taking in and drawing from her environment to create something hugely immersive and cinematic. At moments it calls to mind label-mate Björk, but such is Tusks’ range of influences there’s hints of Bonobo, Explosions in the Sky, Daughter, Foals and more.

Debut album ‘Dissolve’ is comfortingly familiar yet refreshing and even in its most painful moments it serves as a reminder that you’re never alone. The Live Sessions are a reminder that Tusks is not just a vastly talented producer and songwriter, but also a performer worthy of showcasing her craft.
